America: 236 Years of Regression

July 4, 2012

So it’s independence day again, and you’re supposed to think that America is still the shining city on a hill. The gleaming beacon of light. The pinnacle of freedom and peace.

It’s not. It isn’t any one of those things by a mile. And purely for amusement, I’m going to debunk this myth using the government’s very own national anthem. I’ll just do the last four lines so I don’t get delirious from all the government propaganda. It goes like this:

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Ready? Line 1. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just. Anybody remember Iraq? A war based on a lie. A million Iraqis dead. Countless Americans killed. And complete destitution for millions of innocent people. Need I say Vietnam? Korea? Somalia? Afghanistan? The list goes on and on. A close look at almost any region of the world would leave many in disgust over the horrific, immoral actions of the American government.

And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.” Is that so? Would God support theft on the part of a privileged group of government workers? How about the killings of millions overseas? Talk about immorality. I think God sees America today as a disgrace.

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave. Let’s list off the triumphs of the American government. $15 trillion in debt? Check. Micromanaged economy? Check. Housing bubble? Check. Soaring healthcare costs? Check. I think you get the point.

O’er the land of the free. So let me see here. The military can indefinitely detain you without a word to your family. Every large transaction is monitored. Phone conversations and emails are no longer private. There’s a good chance you’ll get pepper sprayed if you protest. And the president can decide to kill you if he deems in necessary. That’s freedom for you.

And the home of the brave! This one has to be most ridiculous of all. Bravery? Who is willing to stand up and fight the evil forces of government? Who is willing to turn off the Cubs game and engage in dissidence? Address the immorality? Challenge the power of the elite? Or even question the spoon fed propaganda? America does not stand for courage. America is a story of 300 million people who can’t tell their hopes and dreams are being squandered by the same people they keep voting in over and over.
